OCTOBER 2001 - UH Sevens

The tournament was moved this year from Old Deer Park to Guys home ground HOP. Too get rid of any advantage Guys may receive from playing at their home ground, the whole team went out the night before and tried to drink several bars dry. This plan worked a little too well.

Guys entered two teams into a tournament that was well represented by all of the London medical schools. There were two groups with the top two teams going through to the final. Guys 1sts struggled from the start, but managed to win their first three games. However we were eventually knocked out by a good Georges team, but not before several players had projectile vomited their way round HOP. All in all the tournament was a big disappointment, as Guys could easily have done a lot better.

However a lot of praise had to go to Georges who won their first trophy for many a season.

MARCH 2002 - Nottingham Medical Schools Sevens Competition

16 medical schools were represented in this National tournament that Guys had won 2 years previously. Expectations were high once again in a team that was packed with pace. The group stages saw Guys meet Leeds, Southampton, Dundee and a Nottingham university side. Some great sevens rugby was played in these matches and saw Guys convincingly win their group. Next up Guys took on the only other unbeaten side playing Edinburgh in the quarters. Edinburgh could find no way through some ferocious tackling, and in the end Guys put 40 points on what was no slouch side. The semi finals saw Guys playing the Nottingham University side again. This match was very hard fought, but Guys won fairly comfortably in the end. A now very tired Guys team had Cork between them and glory. Cork scored a quick try straight from the kick off, however Guys regrouped quickly and put on a dazzling display scoring 58 unanswered points.

All in all it had been an amazing day, lots of good banter between all the different medical schools and a great result for Guys at the end. All of the team need mentioning for some very committed and excellent play. Alex Burns was outstanding throughout, Mark Carbass and Tom Bevir were a threat whenever they had ball in hand with their excess of gas. Percy and Chris Jack were a class outfit in their forward play. Nick evans showed some touches of genius at scrum half and as for their captain A Vaughton what can you say?

NAMS - 2001-2

MARCH 2002 - RSM sevens competition Honor Oak Park

This tournament was again hosted at the Guys ground by the Royal Society of Medicine. Although a National tournament the competition does not get as good a turn out as the NAMS sevens. Although less teams the competition is a little stiffer with good sides such as Birmingham and Cardiff participating. However on the back of their recent victory Guys were expecting to do well.

The format took the form of a league with the top two teams playing in the final. Some tough matches took place, but in the end Guys managed to come through and win the whole group facing Birmingham in the final. The final was hard fought and very tense right up until the final whistle. Guys scored 2 trys, but then some sloppy defending let Birmingham back into it with a soft try. Some great last ditch defence by Guys managed to hold Birmingham off. Guys were well deserved winners of their second trophy of the year.
