The Maxine Hallworth GKT Rugby Scholarship

The Maxine Hallworth GKT Rugby Scholarship is named in remembrance of the daughter of the current president of the GKT Rugby Club. It is sufficiently endowed to provide a single £1000 scholarship to a promising rugby player entering the medical and dental school. Applicants should contact Elaine.Martyn@kcl.ac.uk for further information.

The rugby club is an amalgamation of the original three medical school clubs, Guy's, King's and St Thomas'. Both Guy's and St Thomas' have illustrious pasts with many international honours. Guy's and thus GKT RFC is the oldest club in the world and fields four regular sides on a Saturday and two on a Wednesday.

The Scholarship has been provided through the generosity of the president and many club supporters. There is a need for further contributions so that the award can be consolidated and eventually extended. These should be made out to King's College London and sent to Dr T. Gibson, Department of Rheumatology, Guy's Hospital, London SE1 9RT.

The Paul Scanlan Memorial Bursary

The Paul Scanlan Memorial Bursary and St. Thomas's Hospital RFC Prize, are now available to Medical or Dental students starting their third years. The bursary is to be an annual prize and is open to those who have just finished Year Two / or entering first year of clinical medicine.

The Paul Scanlan Memorial Bursary is worth £1000 and the STHRFC Prize is worth £500. It is open to both male and female applicants who have excelled academically, and who are contributing widely and enthusiastically to the rugby club.

Applicants need to write formally to Dr Terence Gibson, Department of Rheumatology, 4th Floor, Guy's Hospital, London, SE1 9RT stating:

  • their financial need
  • their academic record
  • their contribution to the club

In future, applicants shall apply before the end of the second year in order to be considered for the following academic session. However this year, the arbitrary closing date is Friday 30th September, to be considered for the 2005-6 award.

Many thanks and good luck to all.
